Ok, so two big things went on with hardly a comment from the peanut gallery (I speak of myself of course).
#1 – F1 crowns a new champion.
So the Formula 1 season ended with one of the most climatic races I’ve seen in a long long time. The race starts out with Philippe Masa (hometown hero in Brazil) 7 points behind Lewis Hamilton – F1’s newest wonderkind. Masa has to win and Hamilton has to finish 6th or worse in order for Philippe to be crowned champion. He grabs pole position, sprints off to a healthy lead and never looks back. Lewis qualifies respectfully (not great) and runs 5th or 6th throughout the race. Practically toying with defeat which considering that he lost the championship last year in the last race you’d think he’d be avoiding.
Both are exceedingly skilled drivers and I’d have to give the nod to Hamilton based upon raw talent. But I’m pulling for Masa owing to his playing a support role for Schumacher all those years as well as new Ferrari boy (my favorite of all) Kimi Raikkonen and the fact that Lewis has only been in F1 just the 2 years now.
Fast forward to the end and we get rain – my personal favorite for making races more interesting. Lewis is in 6th and can’t make any progress until ….. the last damn corner on the last damn lap. One of the ‘lower ranked’ drivers who has climbed up to 4th due to the rain and pit strategies manages to spin out on the last corner (slick tires I believe) and Lewis is able to squeeze by to claim 5th and the world title!!! What a freaking race !!!
#2 – USA crowns a new champion (for the people).
You’d have to be living under a rock on Mars to not be aware of the earth shattering fact that the USA (my dear dear provider of income) has elected an African American as president.
Many people I know bemoan his ’socialist’ stance and willingness to help the less fortunate (at the expense of the more fortunate) but being Canadian I can’t help but feel that he’s the absolute best man for the job and be a bit envious that we don’t have ANYONE up here in Canada worth voting for.
If there are 2 things that the US needs its
1) Help for the lower and middle class.
2) More friends in the world.
.. and Obama promises to deliver on both.
I’m unabashedly thrilled to see the reaction of those who supported Obama in his run for the leadership as well as those throughout the world who cheered his victory. If only Canada had someone worth calling yet another election for.
